Good club programs typically have kids who all start on their high school team so it is unrealistic that all will start on the club team. They can't just jump ship because there are not that many high school AAU teams out here.
College coaches recruit programs that have more depth and practices tend to be more competitive on very deep AAU teams. That is where kids get better, not just games. |

I am sure politics even rears its head on high school teams, especially private schools where pissing off the wrong parent could mean your job.
On the outside looking in, people can come up with anything as far as viewing how a club program is run. It is easy to say it is about politics. My take is that most of the good programs around these parts play to win. |

| Yes, and the high school teams that play daddy's little girl are usually really bad. |

So, to sum it up, I'd be crazy to NOT pursue/recruit the very best players I could possibly get? That acquiring 2-3 players in a given area where their point of emphasis is not only get better, but receive the playing time they think they deserve? That after acquiring 7-8 of those kids, then go out and get 3-4 more who are on that cusp of being good, perhaps pushing a starter at their school, or an underclassman caught in a numbers' game, ready to explode?
I can do that...
Or, should I just grab the kids 'everyone outside of the elites' has, and drill them, prepare them, teach them how to expose the 'better' kids as well as beat the ones they're supposed to? That can happen with one basic ingredient coaches today 'REFUSE' to employ...give them the authority they earn in practice. The opportunity to govern yourself, when offered as a reward, is something NO CONTROL FRE...er, coach is interested in today. The ego necessary to accomplish this is why Phil Jackson employs it. Kids want to think for themselves. We adults resist the urge to allow it. Status quo renders 80% of our basketball playing kids underpriviledge, because the adults DON'T KNOW HOW TO EXTEND THE PRIVILEDGE to everyone.Coaches ALLOW for the cliques.Coaches ALLOW the class systems. Can I coach these kids employing this 'unusual' tactic? Can I coach them up, regardless of talent discrepancy? Can I show them how to be there, within striking range, at the end? Can I THEN turn them loose to do so, being only their point of reference/reminder on the sideline, allowing them,THEM to decide the outcome? To in fact, be their PARTNER?
I know I can...
At the end of the day, then it must be the money.Gets way too much mention NOT to be, right Coaches? This will be interesting... |

Alot of coaches start out with one team maybe from a high school. Many high schools have talented players, but, the girls don't play basketball in the off season.
This is a must in order to have a successful high school program. Especially, since you will not see many girls at an open gym. |

Thats a great tip, and applies to many boys' programs as well...
I'll look at that for a moment... |

Just that the Girls Basketball is so uniquely built, run, supported and COACHED, I find it infinitely fascinating, and as I said earlier, awfully challenging...
...Been offered an opportunity to coach one, and after consults w/ friends who've succeeded AND failed at it, I'm a BIG fan of what you guys do.I had a few discussions over the years, and with two big shooters who always made it clear you guys are set apart from just basketball coaches...Coach Penny said to me once, when I was a young man, that what you convince, inspire and command to a kid is SO MUCH better than what you can show them, and the coaches who don't know/believe that NEVER WIN...
Just on the outside looking in... LEARNING. |
