Nice responses so far! And yes, you can PM me;sorry I didn't allow for that option, parents!
Thought for the Day:OBSTACLES are important. They keep you from your goals if you allow them. They also help you learn about yourselves.Because of them, you learn to make necessary adjustments. They are the stepping stones to acheiving the success you seek.OBSTACLES. Internal [you] and external [other people, things, circumstances] OBSTACLES are your challenge, your opponent.
The basis for Problem Solving. In basketball, and in life... |

BALLHANDLING TIP: When you walk, your left arm moves forward when your right leg does, and vice-versa.
For those whose opposite-hand dribbling is a concern, make that adjustment the very next time you dribble a ball moving in that direction, i.e. if you're going right-to-left left-handed, where are your feet/legs?
Try it, report back, watch what you unconciously discover! |

TEAM BASKETBALL CONCEPTS
Much is written, spoken about team concepts. Philosophical diffences, idealogies, principles etc exist for basketball minds everywhere, be it player, coach, management, commentator, fan etc.
The one common thread is winning basketball requires a sound team concept.
Many embrace the concept, only to fail to adhere to it.
Most understand it, but refuse to abide by it 100%.
Very few are willing to undertake the responsibility required to exist within their endeavor successfully.
Contrary to what some say, this is the ultimate in selfishness! There IS an I in team. Many components, facets and variables co-exist in the team concept.Within that team, EACH AND EVERY INDIVIDUAL SHALL CONFORM SELFISHLY AS ONE. That, beyond all other factors, is the clarifying characteristic of the Team Concept.
Are you selfish?Dare to be? Influence those on your team to be? Check behind me, show me differently.Look at WINNERS. I'll wait... |

CHARACTER
Nothing stands out more than character when you play basketball, practice basketball, learn basketball.
Ever watch a guy not shake hands after a loss?
Ever watch a kid get so frustrated with a call by an official, they lose their focus?Say something that costs them a technical?Their team? The game?
Ever watch a coach reprimand a kid in such a way it brings to mind you'd NEVER allow your child to play with THAT TEAM?
Ever watch a parent display behavior so bad YOU KNOW its not their first time?
CHARACTER. It extends throughout basketball,whether you're learning,practicing,playing,watching,coaching...
START AT CHARACTER...
5 SPOTS LEFT 7TH-8TH GRADERS, BTW
4 SPOTS LEFT 9TH GRADERS... |

REASONS WHY PLAYERS GET CUT OUTSIDE OF NOT BEING GOOD ENOUGH...
1]Conditioning-in gymnasiums across the state this week, kids are summarily dismissing themselves because they're simply out of shape. How kids can walk the halls critical of team members they deem themselves better than is irrelevant. They were cut because they quit because they were out of shape.Move that body, or move out the way
2]Prior Preparation of your Physical Body- this includes sleep, eating well and hydration. Many kids underestimate the importance of these components to a body that will be placed under various extremes off and on over the course of a couple hours. The energy from a honey bun from the gas station will make you crash in 30 minutes if you're simply walking to 3rd period. The energy you lack from little sleep due to whatever kept you awake cannot be replaced in right now time because you want it to.Gatorade is for REPLENISHING FLUID LOSS, water is for sustaining life. The incident of cramps, muscle pulls, pain and the aformentioned general lack of conditioning [#1] can be squarely placed on prior preparation of your physical body.
3]Poor/Lack of Fundamentals/Basic Mechanics- While practice time, workouts and repetition are times when a player can improve his/her mechanics and fundamentals, tryouts are a poor place to have your lack thereof exposed to most coaches. My thoughts are different, but the focus here are tryouts at HS/Mid-school/AAU level, where the coaches may be more interested in securing their immediate impact players, as opposed to player development. Techniques are taught/acquired and executed differently by different coaches/players etc. One thing's for certain,if you lack them, your chances are drastically reduced vs the kid with less 'talent' at athleticism but fundamentally sound and aware.
4]Attitude and Body Language- Nothing you can do to a coach, a team, teammates, your parents, teachers etc can be as disappointing, distracting and demoralizing as demonstrating bad attitude and body language when striving towards a group goal. It is the cancer of any group, and coaches, for better or worse, ALL MOVE TO ELIMINATE THAT CANCER. Exceptions come with those w/ extraordinary ability, and USUALLY AT THE COST OF THE ENTIRE TEAM. At a tryout, be aware that this quality is prime in deciding how to weed out huge numbers of candidates.Perception?Mostly.Reality?BELIEVE IT.Its the easy way out for most coaches.Make it hard on them; wear basketball clothes and shoes. Don't wear boxer shorts, then demonstrate, unless you're trying out at The County[another thread, another day].Be well-groomed,hair braided if long,or at least controlled. These are life factors, not just ball.Coaches would like to know they're picking good cats.Make it so.Watch your expressions verbally, consider the adults around you,say yes and no to questions and be prepared to conduct yourself in an orderly fashion.Adults like to call it professional.I call it RESPECT. For the function, the cause, the room, the people, YOURSELF.
5]Discipline, Distinction and Determination- In human beings, few things are easier to see in other human beings after the visual of their physicality than discipline, distinction and determination. Discipline requires preparation, ability and resolve.Nose itches , you address it.If it happens often enugh you address it the same way. One with discipline will prepare differently than initially.Get tissue, carry hankie etc. By that virtue, they are distinct from those who wouldn't, determined to address the recurring issue properly, promptly and to a positive result. Distinction requires a break from the norm, not being influenced by the crowd, your peers or anything that would distract you from your intent. Determination allows you to put the wheels in motion.Get to this point, acheiving goals becomes objective, not hope.
I wish I had this already posted before this week, and perhaps one kid outside of those who've already benefitted from it would be able to now. Doesn't matter who you've camped/cliniced/tried out with-for, you can always acquire the life/ball skills talked about here.No secret pill.I don't make this up, but also learned through trial and error, like all before me and after me. My goal, my give-back is to reinforce it.
IS IT YOUR GOAL TO ACQUIRE AND ACHEIVE? |
